Objets relais

by Irvin Anneix and Helène Combal-Weiss
2022

« Objets relais » invites teenagers to bring to class objects that belonged to their ancestors. To perpetuate their legacies, we show them how to scan their object in 3D, in a digitization ritual. Facing the camera, they deliver their investigations. The act is political:  that of making heard individual stories that are not valued in the school environment, where only the collective story prevails. These testimonies are broadcast in a video installation for cultural venues.

« Objets relais » is a documentary project by Irvin Anneix, Hélène Combal-Weiss and Yasmine Benabdallah which invites teenagers to bring to class objects that belonged to their ancestors.

Filiation issues are not so common for teenagers. The object becomes an intermediary to link two generations. In order that teenager fully appropriates their heritages, we show them how to scan their objects in 3D, by photogrammetry. Digital is a promise of eternity.

Facing the camera, in their classroom, the students report the results of their investigation. The act is for us political: that of making heard at school individual stories that are not valued in the school environment. The project makes these specificities a source of pride.

To broadcast these testimonies, we have designed a video installation for cultural institutions. It is made up of seven rectangular modules, made of recycled wooden cleats. Associated together, they form a circle reminiscent of the shape of 3D modeling software.

In the center of each module is hung a TV screen. All screens are the same size. The spectator is invited to enter the center of the structure to listen to the testimonies. The sound comes directly from the TV screen. On the other screens, you can discover the object in question from different perspectives. On a large wall located behind the installation, you can discover a 3D film. We stroll through the galaxy of objects, with original music in the background.

CULTURAL MEDIATION: ENGAGING TEENAGERS FROM THE TERRITORIES

We made the first edition of Objet relais in Seine-Saint-Denis and we want to develop this experience in other territories. This requires a mediation reflexion work with the teams who invite us. We can make the projet with classes or groups of teenagers, during four workshops of three hours.
