Culture VR - The Horrifically Real Virtuality

The Horrifically Real Virtuality

The Horrifically Real Virtuality paints an introspective portrait of the emerging VR, and aims to evoke, with tenderness and self-mockery, its relationship with cinema.

Bela Lugosi, long confined in roles of famous vampires, is entrusted by his friend Ed Wood, a young Hollywood Z movies director, the headliner of his latest film. Bela embodies a character with the ability to access a parallel dimension, the Real Virtuality, in which he encounters humanoids from another time: the spectators.

The experience revives Ed Wood – famous for being crowned « worst director of all time » two years after his death. Spectators are invited to both attend the shooting and watch the projection of his latest film, and even « step into » the movie to embody the characters themselves.

The Horrifically Real Virtuality features a production clearly heading to disaster: nothing about the film is finished, the production team is overrun, the actor takes himself confusingly for his character. The narrative is full of references to genre cinema, with its grotesque special effects contrasting voluntarily with the cross-reality technologies involved. Throughout the experience, mechanisms and processes are openly revealed, on and off set superimpose indefinitely, staging and subject merge, creating a dimension halfway between real and virtual: the illusion of the false.

The Horrifically Real Virtuality is a large-field experience: in groups of six, spectators wander into a space of 70 m2, organized in seven different sets. The experience lasts about 30 minutes.
The Horrifically Real Virtuality deepens the reflexion on immersion and metafiction mechanisms, exploring the different layers of reality.
