La limite est une façade

by Dorian Rigal Minuit
2022

Four architectural archetypes from the Paris region are digitized and presented as archaeological artifacts in a museum. They are simple plaster without color uprooted from their urbanity. But one day their life changes, they will start to metamorphose and become organic and soft objects until they are compressed to extremes like a Caesar. Then slowly, one by one, in fantastic universes, will become themselves again until they find the skin, the color of which they were once dressed.

In the contemporary and the future shape, the megalopolis breaks down the natural link we had with our original home. Far from the house, from the habitat which protected our intimacies and allowed the development of prodigious imaginations, urban buildings tend to offer boxes to consume. Spaces empty of imagination that technology fills with backlit screens. Living shelf used to store city dwellers in orthogonal spaces, best designed to maximize the urban structure.

La limite est une façade is a short film about the sociality of architecture. How the urban building, through its facade, imposes a particular urbanity. The vast majority of buildings are inaccessible. These are volumes of air from which we benefit because they are private. Thus cities offer city dwellers the paradise or hell of being housed there, restricted to floors of different heights. Is this where we store our privacy, our unconscious?

Without a facade, all that remains is the void supported by a floor. Unlike the house, the building does not know how to cling to the ground and allow the inhabitant to construct a full and satisfying story. From the outside he is subject to fantasy, from the inside he produces no poetry. The film seeks to confront different facades by tearing them from their dominant stature in order to consider them as sculptural, malleable objects of study. They become artifacts that can be looked down upon and thus become accessible subjects.
