The “Fare thee well, Cher Ami!” project was born of a desire to tell and relive the epic and heroic tale of the british pigeon called “Cher Ami” that saved 194 soldiers during the Great War.
The main experience is a virtual reality experience in which the user will embody the pigeon, Cher Ami. In a manner reminiscent of a flight simulator, the user’s task is to reach the Allies’ base camp safe and sound. To succeed, he has to place his trust in and be guided by the “allies” still on the ground. These are played by the spectators who have access to an interactive map and follow the pigeon’s progress from a distance. They are then able to send instructions in real time using their mobile phones so that they appear in the sky through which the pigeon is flying in his virtual reality helmet.
The experience was built on the latest technological developments in terms of immersion and interactivity, based on the WebVR engine which facilitated optimal online use.
The installation “Fare Thee Well, Cher Ami!” has been presented at the Musée des Confluences in Lyon, during the Fête de la Science in 2017 and then at the departmental archives of Rhône. To produce this content, we were accompanied by the Musée des Confluences and a scientists commitee to ensure the quality of the historical and ethological content.
