Culture VR - Empty Room


The EMPTY ROOM project Empty Room is dedicated to the exploration of new musical composition and spatialization methods when they are combined with virtual 3D spaces, developed on multiplayer or mono player technologies, using the latest video game and virtual reality technologies. A full 3D spatial experience In Empty Room the user moves freely trough a 40m2 virtual plateau in the middle of a giant hypercube orbiting over the earth. All around and inside the plateau a genuine 64 3D VR channel audio spatializer is combined to an abstract and ever changing organic visual environment. Sound and space merge together and become whole. Three different perception of space are displayed : Wide and aerial (blue), occlusive with perception shift (red), extreme reduced space sensation (grey). Christine Webster

Christine Webster is a french composer and researcher.
She works and lives in Paris, France.

Webster studied electoacoustic composition with Jean Schwartz in the late eighties. She worked as an audio post-production sound engineer for the french tv and movie industries and produces her own electronic music, for experimental films, radiophonic residencies, festivals and art exhibitions.
In 2006 she began to investigate the potential of virtual reality and experimental electronic music, mostly on Second Life and on the french Francogrid. In 2013 she worked with EnsaLab's Spatial Media laboratory where she develloped her VR flagship project Empty Room. This project is now part of her thesis, directed by Anne Sedes at CICM Paris 8.
The quality of space sensed trough the materiality of sound is at the center of her sound works, going from the inherent spatiality of sound to vast and complex virtual sound mappings.
